Capture Rate

Description

This metric measures the percentage of people passing in front of a space (storefront, mall corridor, public street) who actually enter it. It connects exterior traffic with interior traffic, quantifying the attraction power of the storefront, window displays, and entrance.

ElementDetail
DescriptionRatio between entries to the space and passersby in front of it, per time bucket: Capture Rate (%) = Entries / Passersby × 100.
Algorithm1. An exterior counting line counts the people passing in front of the access (both directions).
2. The entrance counting line counts the people entering (People Counting).
3. Both counts are aggregated per time bucket and the ratio is computed.
Key Parameters• Placement of the exterior line (sidewalk, corridor, mall aisle)
• Counted directions on the exterior line
• Time bucket for aggregation (hour, day)
RequirementsA camera with a view of the exterior flow in front of the access — from the storefront itself or from the mall corridor.
Typical Use Cases• Storefront and window display effectiveness
• Benchmarking stores of the same chain in different locations
• Tenant benchmarking inside a mall (capture from corridor traffic)
• Measuring the impact of campaigns, façade remodels, or window changes
• Mall capture from street traffic (exterior perimeter)

Interpretation

  • A low capture rate with high exterior traffic indicates untapped potential: many people pass by but few enter (storefront, window display, or entrance visibility can be improved).
  • A rising capture rate after a change (new window display, signage, campaign) quantifies the real impact of that change.
  • Comparing capture rates between stores of the same category — in a chain or in a mall — separates the effect of the location (exterior traffic) from the effect of the store itself (attraction power).
